Glycerin is a sugar alcohol that is slightly less sweet than sugar. Found naturally in fermented items including beer, wine, vinegars and honey, its also commercially produced and used in food products to retain moisture and keep foods from drying out. Its also a thickener and adds bulk, sweetness and texture to items such as items such as energy bars, icings on baked goods, candy and marshmallows. It is also added to wound treatments for its antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
